This page is for collecting issues and proposals related to the <img> alt attribute.

alt guidance needs simplification

Regarding 4.8.1.1.14 Guidance for conformance checkers:

The complexity of the authoring guidance for the new alt attribute in HTML5 is bad for authors, and for author understanding.

We should remove the last two points in this section:

  • "... document is an e-mail ..." - This is not a particularly useful case to point out in practice, especially since the HTML5 specification as a whole focuses on public web usage.
  • meta generator - It's not clear that making an exception for software that simply adds a meta generator tag will actually be helpful to anyone, thus we should drop this.

We should also remove the authoring guidance in the section(s) below:
