Assigning an identifier to a resource request is standard practice with many web servers. Using this value, all messages and log entries generated during processing of the request can be accumulated for diagnostic purposes. Time stamps, while also used for log entries, may not be useable in high-volume situations when not all clocks are properly synchronized.

Including the request identifier inside a HTML page allows developer tools to associate log entries with a specific page view, and may be valuable for after-the-fact diagnosis purposes.
